Why do I need an RV policy?

RV (recreational vehicle) insurance is a type of insurance policy that protects RVs, such as motorhomes, travel trailers, and campers, against damage as well as protecting the owner from liability. RV insurance typically covers the structure of the vehicle, personal belongings inside the vehicle, and liability for damages caused by the owner of the RV. It can also cover roadside assistance and emergency expenses.

The only RV insurance required by law is liability insurance, equal to the amount required by any other motor vehicle. However, it is highly recommended to get more than the bare minimum. RVs are a significant investment, and RV insurance can help protect your investment in case of an accident, theft, or other unexpected event.

Most lenders will also require you to have RV insurance if you finance your RV. In addition, many campsites, RV parks, and other locations where you might stay in your RV have requirements for RV insurance coverage.

What does my RV policy cover?

There are several types of coverage that may be included in an RV insurance policy:

  • Collision coverage: covers damages to the RV caused by a collision with another vehicle or object

  • Comprehensive coverage: covers damages to the RV from non-collision events, such as fire, theft, or vandalism

  • Liability coverage: covers damages or injuries that the RV owner is legally responsible for causing to another person or property

  • Medical payments coverage: covers medical expenses for the RV owner and passengers in the event of an accident

  • Personal belongings coverage: covers personal items inside the RV in the event of a loss, such as clothing, electronics, and sporting equipment

RV insurance may also include coverage for:

  • Emergency expenses: covers expenses incurred as a result of a breakdown, such as hotel stays or transportation costs

  • Total loss replacement: covers the cost of replacing a total loss RV with a new one

  • Full-timer coverage: for those who use their RV as a primary residence, this covers additional living expenses in the event that the RV is uninhabitable
