Liability

Just like personal auto insurance, the minimum amount of liability insurance required for commercial policies is 25/50/25 in South Carolina.

  • $25,000 in Personal Injury Coverage per person

  • $50,000 total personal injury coverage per accident

  • $25,000 in property damage coverage

This is just a starting point however, and having high limits of liability on your commercial auto policy is even more important than your personal policy. Many businesses have assets, some of which can be very valuable, and those assets, as well as the continued operation of your business, are at risk if you do not have sufficient liability coverage. If you have other drivers besides yourself, and multiple cars on the road, making deliveries or travelling between jobsites or clients’ houses, your risk for an accident is much higher than just the average driver commuting between home and work.

Our team of experienced agents will work with you to evaluate your business’s needs and how much liability coverage is recommended.

Combined Single Limit

One difference between a personal auto and business auto policy, is that they often have one single, combined limit of liability, instead of separate limits for bodily injury and property damage. This allows the insurance company to use that money where needed, up to the limit in the event of a claim.

Collision

This portion of your business auto policy is very similar to a personal car insurance policy. Collision coverage protects your property in the event of an accident, whether you’re at fault or not. In an accident where the other driver is at fault, their policy will pay for the damages to your vehicle, up to their limit of liability for property damage. But if they are uninsured, underinsured, or you are found to be at fault, collision coverage will fix or replace your vehicle so you can get back to work.

Comprehensive

What if you have some other type of loss, such as fire, flooding, hitting a deer, or even hail damage? How about vandalism or theft? This is where comprehensive coverage kicks in, and is just as important as collision. Think of all the different places your work vehicles go, and the kinds of things that could happen to them at any time. The last thing you want is to be losing money because you don’t have enough automobiles to get the job done.

Comprehensive coverage is sometimes referred to as “other than collision”. If you have a loan on the car, this will also be required by the lender until the car is paid off. You will often hear the comprehensive grouped with collision as “Comprehensive and Collision” or just “Comp and Collision”. This term often goes by another name, “full coverage”.
