Hurricane Preparedness Guide
Every year, the very real threat of a hurricane looms large for coastal states like South Carolina. Some of us have been through dozens of storms, and others may have just moved here and have never been through even a tropical storm.
Here is quick guide on how to prepare for a hurricane for when the next one comes our way.
Consider Evacuating. Hurricanes do not arrive without warning, if the storm is bad enough, consider traveling inland where you can avoid the storm.
If You Choose To Stay, Prepare Your Home. Get anything out of your yard that can be blown by the wind, like trashcans, grills, sprinklers, childrens’ toys, lawn decorations, potted plants, etc. Boarding up windows with at least 5/8” plywood is a good way to protect them from flying debris as well.
Gas Up Your Vehicles. Fuel shortages are common after a major storm.
Stock Up On Supplies to get you through the storm and the period after in case power and water are unavailable. Here is a list of recommended supplies. Add anything else you think you might need if you can’t leave your house for a few days.
Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
Prescription medications
Flashlight
Extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle or air horn to signal for help
Manual can opener (for food)
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers
Pet food and extra water for your pet
Cash. Sometimes card processing systems will be down after a storm.
Fire extinguisher
Books, games, puzzles or other activities (you might spend longer without power than you expect!)
5. Check your home and auto policies before the storm. The best time to find out what your coverages and deductibles are is before a storm, not after!
