Commercial General Liability Insurance

Essential Protection for South Carolina Businesses

If you own or operate a business in South Carolina, Commercial General Liability insurance (often called CGL) is one of the most important coverages you can carry. It’s the foundation of most business insurance plans—and for good reason. General liability protects your business from the kinds of everyday risks that could otherwise lead to costly lawsuits, settlements, and reputational damage.

At The Ferguson Insurance Team, we help businesses across Charleston, North Charleston, Walterboro, and beyond get the general liability protection they need at a price that makes sense. Whether you’re a contractor, retailer, office-based business, or something else entirely, we’ll tailor coverage to your specific needs.

What Does Commercial General Liability Insurance Cover?

A Commercial General Liability policy helps protect your business from claims involving:

  • Bodily Injury – If someone is hurt on your business premises or due to your operations (for example, a customer slips and falls), CGL can cover medical costs and legal expenses.
  • Property Damage – If your business accidentally damages someone else’s property, CGL can help pay for repairs or replacement.
  • Personal & Advertising Injury – Covers things like libel, slander, copyright infringement, or false advertising claims.
  • Legal Defense Costs – Whether a claim is valid or not, your CGL policy helps cover the cost of defending your business in court.

This coverage is essential whether you interact with the public, perform work at customer sites, or simply want protection against the unexpected.

What Doesn’t Commercial General Liability Cover?

While CGL offers broad protection, there are certain things it does not cover, such as:

  • Professional Errors or Negligence – If your business provides advice or services, you may need Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions) insurance.
  • Employee Injuries – These are covered under Workers Compensation insurance.
  • Damage to Your Own Property – For that, you’ll need Commercial Property Insurance or a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP).
  • Intentional Acts – Claims related to deliberate or criminal actions by you or your employees are typically excluded.

We’ll help you identify any gaps in protection and recommend complementary coverages as needed.

Why Do Businesses Need Commercial General Liability?

Every business faces risk—whether it’s from customers walking through your door, vendors visiting your job site, or a simple human mistake. Without general liability coverage, just one accident or lawsuit could financially devastate your business.

Commercial General Liability insurance:

  • Protects your assets and reputation
    Helps you meet contract requirements
Provides peace of mind so you can focus on growth
May be legally or contractually required by landlords, clients, or licensing bodies

From small businesses to large commercial operations, CGL is a smart and necessary investment.

Is Commercial General Liability Insurance Expensive?

Not at all—especially considering the protection it provides.

At The Ferguson Insurance Team, we work with a wide range of insurance carriers to find the most affordable options for your type of business. For many small to mid-size businesses, commercial general liability premiums are surprisingly reasonable—often starting at just a few hundred dollars per year.

You don’t have to sacrifice quality for cost. We’ll help you get strong protection at a price that fits your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch insurance before my policy's renewal?

Yes! You do not have to wait until the expiration date of a policy to change to a different carrier. If you’re unsure about the process of changing your auto insurance, our agents can walk you through that process, step-by-step.

Do you offer coverage bundles?

We do! Many of the insurance companies we represent offer savings and other benefits for having multiple policies with them. We can also create a customized bundle within our agency with coverage from different companies to best fit your needs. Many of those companies still offer a discount for having multiple policies with our agency, even if they are not all with the same company.

I'm moving to South Carolina, can you help me with my insurance needs?

We help many new South Carolina residents take care of their insurance needs, both auto insurance, and home or renters, when they first move to our state. Our agents can walk you through the process obtaining car and property insurance that satisfies the specific requirements of the state, your lender or your property manager.

I'm not sure what I need, can you help?

Absolutely! We know that most people don’t spend all day thinking about insurance the way we do! We’re here to help by providing you with education and listening to your unique needs so we can better understand you and what insurance solutions would best fit your specific circumstances.

My car insurance keeps going up, what can I do?

It’s true that auto insurance rates have risen across the board in the last few years due to a variety of factors, like increased cost of both parts and labor, as well as increased loss frequency and even the increased costs of reinsurance for carriers. The good news is you have options. If your rates have gone up, it may be a good idea to chat with a local agent and see if there are other options that are more affordable.

What is "full coverage"?

Great question! Contrary to popular belief, “full coverage” is not an insurance term, and agents don’t typically use it, because it can mean many things to different people. The most common definition though, is usually an auto policy that has both collision and comprehensive (also called other-than-collision) coverage. However, even a policy with these coverages may not “fully” cover you, depending on the circumstances. Coverages like towing and roadside assistance, Gap insurance, and medical payments are just a few options that might not be included on a policy that has collision and comprehensive coverage. Instead of using generic phrases like “full coverage”, we prefer to work with our clients to discuss their needs, and explain thoroughly exactly what their policy does or does not cover.
