What Is Auto Insurance?
Auto insurance helps protect you financially if you’re in an accident, your car is damaged, or you’re held liable for injuries or property damage. In South Carolina, all drivers are required to carry minimum liability coverage, but at The Ferguson Insurance Team, we always recommend choosing higher limits of liability to make sure you’re truly protected, especially as medical and repair costs have continued to rise.
A standard auto insurance policy typically includes:
- Liability coverage: Covers injuries and property damage you cause to others in an at-fault accident.
- South Carolina requires minimum limits of 25/50/25, but these limits often fall short in real-world scenarios. We strongly recommend higher liability limits to protect your assets and your future. Click here to learn more about what these numbers mean.
- Collision coverage: Pays to repair or replace your car after a crash, regardless of who’s at fault.
- Comprehensive coverage: Covers damage from events other than collisions, such as theft, vandalism, hail, fallen trees, and even hitting a deer.
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage: Protects you if you’re hit by a driver with no insurance or too little coverage. This is essential in South Carolina, where 1 in 10 drivers is uninsured.
- Medical payments: Helps cover medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault.
Understanding Liability Limits
Liability insurance pays the damages of other people and their property if you cause an accident. The state minimums often aren’t enough, and one serious crash can leave you financially exposed.
That’s why we always recommend higher liability limits to provide better protection for your income, savings, and personal assets.
For added peace of mind, many of our clients also choose a Personal Umbrella Policy to extend their liability protection beyond their auto insurance limits. Umbrella coverage is surprisingly affordable and can be a smart choice for families, homeowners, business owners, and anyone with assets.
Optional Coverages to Consider
Auto insurance can be customized with a variety of valuable add-ons. Some optional coverages to consider include:
- Rental reimbursement: Covers the cost of a rental car while yours is in the shop after a covered claim
- Towing and roadside assistance: Get help with flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and more
- Gap coverage: Pays the difference between your car’s actual value and what you owe if it’s totaled
- New car replacement: Replace your totaled vehicle with a brand-new one, not just a depreciated value
- Custom parts and equipment: Covers aftermarket enhancements like custom wheels, lift kits, or audio systems.
Auto insurance is broad, but not all-inclusive. Some things aren’t covered.
- Wear and Tear: Insurance is not a maintenance plan, so this would be excluded.
- Business Use: Typically, standard auto policies do not cover you if you use your vehicle to conduct business. Ask our experts if you need a Business Auto policy.

Reviews From Our Customers
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch insurance before my policy's renewal?
Yes! You do not have to wait until the expiration date of a policy to change to a different carrier. If you’re unsure about the process of changing your auto insurance, our agents can walk you through that process, step-by-step.
Do you offer coverage bundles?
We do! Many of the insurance companies we represent offer savings and other benefits for having multiple policies with them. We can also create a customized bundle within our agency with coverage from different companies to best fit your needs. Many of those companies still offer a discount for having multiple policies with our agency, even if they are not all with the same company.
I'm moving to South Carolina, can you help me with my insurance needs?
We help many new South Carolina residents take care of their insurance needs, both auto insurance, and home or renters, when they first move to our state. Our agents can walk you through the process obtaining car and property insurance that satisfies the specific requirements of the state, your lender or your property manager.
I'm not sure what I need, can you help?
Absolutely! We know that most people don’t spend all day thinking about insurance the way we do! We’re here to help by providing you with education and listening to your unique needs so we can better understand you and what insurance solutions would best fit your specific circumstances.
My car insurance keeps going up, what can I do?
It’s true that auto insurance rates have risen across the board in the last few years due to a variety of factors, like increased cost of both parts and labor, as well as increased loss frequency and even the increased costs of reinsurance for carriers. The good news is you have options. If your rates have gone up, it may be a good idea to chat with a local agent and see if there are other options that are more affordable.
What is "full coverage"?
Great question! Contrary to popular belief, “full coverage” is not an insurance term, and agents don’t typically use it, because it can mean many things to different people. The most common definition though, is usually an auto policy that has both collision and comprehensive (also called other-than-collision) coverage. However, even a policy with these coverages may not “fully” cover you, depending on the circumstances. Coverages like towing and roadside assistance, Gap insurance, and medical payments are just a few options that might not be included on a policy that has collision and comprehensive coverage. Instead of using generic phrases like “full coverage”, we prefer to work with our clients to discuss their needs, and explain thoroughly exactly what their policy does or does not cover.
