Church Insurance in South Carolina

Serving congregations across the Charleston area, the SC Lowcountry, and throughout South Carolina

Your church is more than a building — it’s a community of people, a hub of ministry, and a stewardship responsibility. Protecting it requires more than a standard commercial insurance policy. It requires a risk partner who understands how churches operate, what risks they face, and how to close the gaps that standard coverage leaves open. That’s exactly what The Ferguson Insurance Team does.

Church Insurance Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Churches face a distinct set of risks that most generalist insurance agents simply aren’t equipped to address. From Sexual Abuse & Molestation liability to volunteer driver coverage, from protecting historic sanctuaries to defending board members from governance disputes — church insurance requires specialized knowledge, specialized carriers, and a proactive approach to risk management.

At The Ferguson Insurance Team, church insurance isn’t something we add on the side. It’s a dedicated focus. We work exclusively with specialty carriers who understand the faith-based market, and we bring a consultative approach to every congregation we serve — helping church leadership identify and close coverage gaps before they become claims.

What Does Church Insurance Cover?

A complete church insurance program is built from multiple layers of coverage. Here’s what every church should have in place — and what we make sure our clients don’t overlook:

Church Property Insurance

Covers your sanctuary, classrooms, fellowship hall, parsonage, and contents against fire, storm, vandalism, and other perils. We ensure your building is properly valued at true replacement cost — including Ordinance or Law coverage for code upgrades — not just what you’ve always had it insured for.

General Liability Insurance

Protects your church if a visitor is injured on your property, at an event, or during a ministry activity. Essential for every congregation, regardless of size or programs offered.

Sexual Abuse & Molestation (SAM) Coverage

One of the most critical — and most commonly underfunded — coverages in a church program. Standard GL policies often exclude or severely sublimit SAM claims. We ensure your church carries meaningful, standalone protection for this serious exposure.

Cyber Liability Insurance

Churches collect member data, giving records, children’s ministry information, and payroll data — and process online donations. A ransomware attack or data breach can be devastating. Cyber coverage for churches includes breach response, ransomware, and funds transfer fraud protection.

Crime & Fidelity Coverage

Protects against employee dishonesty, embezzlement, check fraud, and social engineering scams — all of which are common in church environments where financial controls are often informal and trust levels are high.

Directors & Officers (D&O) Liability

Protects board members, elders, and deacons from personal financial exposure arising from governance decisions. Without D&O coverage, individual board members can be personally named in lawsuits.

Employment Practices Liability (EPLI)

Covers claims of wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation by current or former employees. Churches operate at the complex intersection of employment law and religious liberty — EPLI is essential protection.

Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA)

When volunteers use personal vehicles for church activities, your church can be held liable for accidents. HNOA coverage closes this gap — yet it’s missing from many church policies.

Additional coverages we evaluate for every church client include Inland Marine for instruments and AV equipment, Business Income / Extra Expense for continuity after a major loss, Ministers’ Professional Liability for counseling ministries, and Umbrella / Excess Liability for broader protection.

Our Approach: Risk Management, Not Just Insurance

Most insurance agents sell policies. We take a different approach. Before we recommend coverage, we sit down with church leadership and conduct a risk discovery conversation — working through your operations, ministries, facilities, and governance to identify exposures you may not know you have.

We use a four-pillar risk management framework — Avoid, Mitigate, Transfer, and Retain — to help churches think about risk holistically. Insurance (Transfer) is one tool. But the churches we serve are also better protected through strong internal policies, staff and volunteer training, and operational procedures that reduce the likelihood of a loss in the first place.

We offer every prospective church client a complimentary 60-minute Risk Discovery Meeting — no cost, no obligation, and no pressure to change anything. Just a conversation focused on protecting your congregation.

I worked with Rhonda deLonge with Ferguson Insurance to review two different policies for homeowners coverage. The insurance requirements were quite different for each property and Rhonda was excellent in researching and providing accurate insurance options to me. Great professional knowledge and customer focused! Thank you Rhonda.

My neighbors recommended this agency, for finding the best match for your insurance needs. They were so right! I was greeted by Jessica and she went right to work. She was so patient in helping me supply the information she needed and advised me, every step of the way, to select just what would be best, for me. Jessica was unstoppable on sifting through every option and even educated me on some areas of insurance, I was not aware of. Her hard work resulted in me saving half on what I was previously paying, for auto insurance. It was a stress free process. Thank you!

Frequently Asked Questions About Church Insurance

Does a standard business insurance policy cover a church?

A standard commercial package policy may provide basic property and liability coverage, but it typically lacks many of the coverages churches need most — including Sexual Abuse & Molestation liability, Directors & Officers protection, Crime & Fidelity, Hired & Non-Owned Auto, and Cyber Liability. Church-specific insurance programs are built with these exposures in mind and provide far more complete protection at competitive pricing.

Is my church covered if a volunteer causes an accident while driving to pick up supplies?

Not automatically. When a volunteer uses their personal vehicle on behalf of your church, your church can be held legally responsible for an accident — even if the volunteer’s personal auto policy is the primary coverage. Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) coverage specifically addresses this exposure and is often missing from church policies. We check for this on every program we review.

Does the church need separate coverage for a daycare or preschool?

Often yes. Licensed daycare and preschool programs have specific liability exposures — including higher duty of care for children, licensing and regulatory requirements, and elevated SAM coverage needs — that may not be adequately addressed under a standard church package policy. We evaluate daycare and preschool operations as a separate coverage consideration for every church that operates one.

What is Sexual Abuse & Molestation (SAM) coverage and why does my church need it?

SAM coverage protects your church if a staff member, volunteer, or other person associated with your ministry is accused of sexual abuse or molestation — and your church is named in the lawsuit for failing to prevent it (institutional negligence). Standard General Liability policies often exclude these claims or limit coverage to amounts far below what a serious lawsuit would cost. Standalone or adequately sublimited SAM coverage is one of the most important components of any church insurance program.

My church has been with the same company for years. Should I still get a review?

Yes! Especially if your church has grown, added programs, or made changes to your facilities since your last thorough review. Coverage gaps often develop silently over time as ministry activities evolve but insurance programs stay static. A no-cost coverage review takes less than an hour and frequently uncovers significant gaps that can be closed with the proper policies or endorsements.

Do you only work with large churches?

Not at all. We believe every church deserves the benefit of professional risk management, no matter their size. In fact, smaller congregations can benefit the most from the resources we bring to our clients. Churches with 50–300 in weekly attendance that may not have formal HR policies, written financial controls, or a complete insurance program in place. Smaller churches are often more vulnerable precisely because they assume their size means their risk is small. We will work with congregations of any size.
